Tim Cone grew up in New York City and now lives in Washington, D.C.. At a young age he accompanied his mother, an art critic, on visits to New York City’s contemporary art galleries. These visits sparked an interest, and he bought his first works of contemporary art as soon he could afford to – within a year of graduating from law school. He has continued collecting ever since.

"Once, a well-known art collector came over to my home," Tim recounts, "and he said that my taste in art was ‘eclectic.’ I think he was diplomatically telling me that it lacked focus. But, when I buy art, it’s often because it contains something that registers with where I too happen to be at that particular moment. For example, when, in 1989, I bought a Cady Noland crate with Budweiser cans, I was a lawyer involved in antitrust litigation against Anheuser-Busch. As my life changes, so does my taste in art. Unless, of course, I buy something out of nostalgia for an earlier phase of my life – like the recent Divers video by Paris Mavroidis, which reminds me of my days in prep school, years ago, as manager of the swim team."

In 2004, Tim started shooting videos of his visits to art installations. He began editing the videos in 2008. "As a lawyer, I’m compulsive about editing my writing, draft after draft. When I watched my videos, I felt they could be turned into something more compelling. Once I got started, the editing bug took hold. I was now editing more than words on the page: images, sound, text, voiceover, ideas... It became captivating to bring it all together into a visual argument."
