Announcing the D.C. State Fair photography contest

DC is a place of many talents. We have gardeners, cooks, bakers, artists, agriculturalists, urban culturalists, and, of course, local creativity. Many states in the U.S. celebrate these fine talents with their annual state fairs. (I am reminded of my very own Kansas state fair growing up, equipped with plenty of cow shows, rollercoaster rides, grilled corn, and country singers.) But D.C. has been left without such exuberant fairs to celebrate the home-grown talents within the District and to bring the locals together in said appreciation. This year, everything is changing with the advent of the DC State Fair on August 28, 2010 as a part of the Columbia Heights Day Festival at Harriet Tubman Elementary Field (11th and Irving Streets NW).

Many a blogger has had their hand in this new development, partnering with Columbia Heights Day to successfully create a DC State Fair tent. There, you will find such competitions as 'tastiest tomato' and 'best home-made pie.' More importantly, however, DC residents will get a chance to submit their entries for an awesome photo contest!

Sponsored by Ten Miles Square and DCist, the photo contest will also be judged by DC-creative-gurus Philippa Huges of our very own Pink Line Project and Dan Silverman from the Prince of Petworth. All photos will be judged on their supremity of DC spirit and their ability to display our cultural independence through images.

In order to win, enter your two best images to the Flickr pool by midnight on Sunday, August 22, and the judges will pick a handful of favorites for semi-finalists. The semi-finalists will be displayed online the week before the fair, and the Grand Prize Winner, First and Second Runners-Up will be printed, framed, and displayed at the DC State Fair on August 28. Winners will get to take their framed prints home, to show off their DC pride to friends, family, and neighbors. Winners will also take home ribbons and small cash prizes.

So SUBMIT NOW!

Entrants must live in the District of Columbia.
Questions, please email Heather at heather@tenmilessquare.com

There is no fee to enter the DC State fair.  However, donations to the organizers are greatly appreciated!  Recommended donation is $5 per entry (but judging will be blind, and donation status will not affect results).  Please visit the DC State Fair website and click the Paypal link.
