Getting Crafty with the Smithsonian Institution

The Smithsonian Women's Committee (SWC) began in 1966 and has raised nearly $10 million to support the Smithsonian and its commitment to knowledge, exploration, and discovery on a worldwide level. One of the SWC's  highlights is the annual Smithsonian Craft2Wear Show — a show and sale of wearable art, clothing, jewelry and accessories.  This year’s show features 45 exhibitors, offering quality items for women and men in all price ranges, from one-of-a-kind jewelry to custom shoes.

This year’s Craft2Wear Show will be held at the National Building Museum, kicking off on Friday, October 26th with the Advance Chance Party from 5:30 – 8:30 pm. By attending this hip happening, party goers will have the first opportunity to purchase amazing, creative and carefully crafted jewelry and clothing. For those who can not make the party on Friday, regular admission to the show will continue on Saturday October 27th and Sunday October 28th.  All guests are sure to be dazzled by the wearable crafts and can feel satisfied knowing that with their attendance they are directly supporting the important work of the Smithsonian Institution.

The Smithsonian Woman’s Committee provides financial assistance to support Smithsonian projects in research, exhibitions and conservation that otherwise may have gone unfunded. Requests for proposals are solicited from all Smithsonian entities, including museums, scientific facilities and the National Zoo. Funding is highly competitive and awarded only after thorough research by members of the SWC and a vote of approval by thefull membership. Last year, the SWC awarded 18 grants totaling $ $367,898 to 12 different Smithsonian units.

We are all extremely grateful to the generous individuals, corporations and foundations who helped make these grants possible with their participation, contributions and support. We are also looking forward to the amazing and wearable art at Craft2Wear as well as the Advance Chance Party!
