For The Jazz Lover: Performance by Gary Smulyan with Mark Master's Ellington Saxophone Encounters

Forbes magazine recently named the thriving H Street NE neighborhood as the 6th hippest neighborhood in the country -- and it never would have gotten this way without the Atlas Performing Arts Center. After the 1968 riots, the Atlas remained vacant for years. Then in 2003, spurred by Jane Lang’s vision and commitment to restore the Atlas as a performing arts center, the city adopted a plan to rebuild the corridor and identified the Atlas as central to the revitalization plan. Today the Atlas is considered the artistic heart of the H St neighborhood and this fall marks the second season of Jazz at the Atlas. This annual celebration is certainly destined to be a DC favorite.

Jazz at the Atlas is curated by Brad Linde, who leads the Bohemian Jazz Caverns Orchestra along the U St. corridor. To give you perspective on Brad Linde, CapitalBop calls him “The Capital city’s contemporary cool king” and Saxophone Journalist Dr. Thomas R. Erdmann says, “Linde plays with the fire of today through the reflexive eyeglasses of the masters. With a deep, rich and full-bodied tone, he quests for harmonic truth through melodic convergence.”  Or put more simply – Linde really knows what he is doing and is a master musician and curator of jazz!  He has given the Atlas a well-deserved reputation for quality programming consisting of new and contemporary work from local, national and international artists.

This should really be exceptional, as Mark Masters is known for his interpretations of legendary artists.  He is also terrific at working with contemporary artists and re-imagining their work for today's audiences. This type of great jazz features works from emerging and legendary musicians and fits perfectly with what we expect from the Atas – DC’s hottest emerging arts center connecting audiences and artists together through art and performances.
