Liz Lerman Dance Exchange turns science into poetry

Liz Lerman Dance Exchange is founded on three essential mantras: 1) We all have knowledge about how to move; 2) We all have stories to tell; 3) We all can learn from witnessing each other’s movements and listening to each other’s stories. Every Liz Lerman workshop, residency, community event and performance is founded on these ideals, and Lerman's newest work is no different.

Described as "a performance, a conversation, a floor show, a game show, and a chance to meet big minds," Liz Lerman's The Matter of Origins opens at the Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center on Friday, September 10 and Sunday, September 12.

The Matter of Origins is about the origin of matter and our perception of 'beginnings.' How do we discover beginnings? How do we think about them? How do you create a work that asks questions about the very nature of the universe? How do you intersect science and dance to reach poetry? In order to communicate these broad ideas, Liz Lerman incorporates both historic and current research in the field of physics as points of departure. From proton smashing to theories of multiple universes, the movement reflects physical concepts of acceleration and intensity in order to communicate scientific origins.

The captivating part of this performance, however, is how the audience will interact with the piece in both acts. Act One is a usual dance performance, augmented by video and sound. Act Two, on the other hand, places the audience in an informal "salon" setting to allow viewers to enjoy refreshments and respond to what they've just experienced. Designed to mimic the salons where scientists at the Manhattan Project once congregated to share knowledge, this setup provides opportunities to challenge the audience - to bring them into the piece and evaluate their role and existence in the discussion of metaphysical, meta-artistic life.
