About This Event

Please join us on Thursday, May 17, 2012 for SOAPBOX, featuring Eleanor Barba, Shahdeh Khodavandi, Katie Macyshyn, and Bryana Robinson. Soapbox is a monthly performance art series at Hillyer Art Space which seeks to increase exposure to this underrepresented form in DC. This month we are pleased to have four artists, each drawing from personal female body experience in very different ways.

Eleanor Barba: Letter to Margie; She Will Never See This
A Pennsylvania native, Eleanor is a recent graduate from the Corcoran College of Art and Design. Her work explores the tragic humor of sexuality in the 21st century. "Letter to Margie" explores the shame of sexuality within families in a drastic fashion, where she shares with the audience a thought that she prays her grandmother will never find out,

Shahdeh Khodavandi: Reconcilliation Medium
“My work is informed by my historical context as an individual, within the framework of Iran’s cultural and political changes. I am part of the Iranian Diaspora resulting from the Islamic revolution. It is impossible to separate my work from this context, as it is steeped in my upbringing in Iran and the conflict between who I am as an artist, a woman, and an immigrant to the United States.”

Bryana Robinson: More Than One Way to Skin a…
Bryana’s work highlights the fragility and ephemerality of human relationships and interaction. Working in mixed media, her work connects the personal with the societal. Born of mixed background in Panama City, Florida, cultural relevance is important to her practice, but her work's significance extends beyond race and background.
Katie Macyshyn: HIDE AND SEEK (Beware The Bakeneko)
Katie’s work analyzes the subjugated individual’s relationships with society. This is accomplished through theatrical means. She is a Fine Art Major at the Corcoran College of Art + Design, class of 2013, where she diligently studies performance and the body. Katie is from Toms River, NJ, where she permanently resides.
