The physics behind the piano is almost as beautiful as the music it produces, from Beethoven to Brubeck. A closer look at this instrument illustrates fascinating physical aspects of music in general.

Why does the grand piano have its peculiar shape, why are the lower strings "ribbed," why are there only 12 notes in the Western scale, why are fifths not "perfect" on the piano and how important is the sounding board?

Dr. Monroe will discuss these and other "whys" of the piano and music in general and offer plenty of examples.
