SUMMARY:Art Appropriation and Richard Prince Case at Hillyer Arts and Artists
LOCATION:Hillyer International Art and Artists\n9 Hillyer Court\nWashington\, District Of Columbia 20008
DESCRIPTION:Please join Hillyer International Arts and Artists\, Adah Rose Gallery\, and a distinguished\n\npanel for a lively discussion on art appropriation and the Richard Prince legal case\n\ncurrently on appeal in New York.\n\nIn December 2008\, photographer Patrick Cariou filed suit against Richard Prince and\n\nGagosian Gallery in Federal District court for copyright infringement in response to\n\nPrince’s appropriation of 35 photographs taken by Cariou without his knowledge or\n\npermission. Several of the works by Richard Prince were sold\, some for as high as $2.5\n\nmillion. The court in New York ruled against Mr. Prince and stated that the appropriation\n\nof the Rastafarian images was not a “fair use” and therefore a copyright violation. The\n\njudge ordered the works destroyed and held both Mr. Prince and Gagosian gallery\n\nliable. The case is currently on appeal and many museums including the Metropolitan\n\nMuseum of Art and MoMA have voiced support for Mr. Prince.\n\nIf you are an artist\, collector\, art historian\, writer\, or musician\, or are generally interested\n\nin the issues that arise between art\, commerce\, and culture\, please join us for what will\n\nbe a wonderful and exciting discussion.
