About This Event
Twenty-four brilliant young competitors from around the world. Seven solo artists. Two weeks of soul-stirring music. One grand celebration of the piano.
This quadrennial competition, named after the great American pianist William Kapell, is one of three American solo piano competitions currently a member of the prestigious World Federation of International Music Competitions.
In addition to competition rounds featuring exceptional young artists from around the world, the event will include performances by noted pianists as well as other public events — a celebration of all things piano.
Celebrate the piano and the international artists who have mastered it — during two weeks of competition, performance and special activity at the 2012 William Kapell International Piano Competition & Festival.
Schedule of Events
SANTIAGO RODRIGUEZ RECITAL
Saturday, July 7 . 8PM — He was the first place winner in the 1975 Kapell International Piano Competition, and this year he is serving as chair of the international jury. Join Santiago Rodriguez as he opens the festival.
PRELIMINARY COMPETITION ROUND
July 10–12 — Get to know the competitors during this free competition round. Over these three days, the competitors will perform solo music from their repertoire list.
BRADFORD GOWEN SEMINAR
Thursday, July 12 . 1PM — So much music, so little time! Recognizing the vastness of the piano’s literature, how do we select the pieces to form our own repertoire?
AN EVENING WITH LEON FLEISHER AND KATHERINE JACOBSON FLEISHER
Thursday, July 12 . 8PM — Leon Fleisher presents an evening of piano music and conversation about his life as a legendary pianist and how he overcame the obstacles he faced after losing the use of two fingers on his right hand.
LEON FLEISHER MASTERCLASS
Friday, July 13 . 11AM — Three University of Maryland School of Music students chosen through a juried audition process will work with Mr. Fleisher in an open masterclass.
GLORIA CHENG RECITAL
Friday, July 13 . 8PM — Gloria Cheng is an avid performer and advocate for contemporary music who performs frequently with the L.A. Philharmonic.
SEMI-FINAL SOLO ROUND
July 13–15 — The nine semi-finalists will play solo works from their chosen repertoire and will also perform part of a concerto with piano accompaniment.
GLORIA CHENG SEMINAR
Saturday, July 14 . 11AM — Ms. Cheng presents a seminar on contemporary playing techniques.
GRAND PIANO PARTY
Sunday, July 15 . 1PM–3PM — Enjoy a fun-filled afternoon exploring the exciting world of the piano. Activities are designed to engage the senses and stimulate the curiosity of both piano novices and enthusiasts.
PIANO PHYSICS
Tuesday, July 17 . 11AM — Professor Christopher Monroe takes a closer look at the piano, illustrating the fascinating physical aspects of this instrument and of music in general.
VIJAY IYER RECITAL
Tuesday, July 17 . 8PM — Vijay Iyer is renowned for composing and performing powerful, cutting-edge music grounded in groove and pulse but also rhythmically intricate and emotionally compelling.
SEMI-FINAL CHAMBER ROUND
July 17 & 18 — In two days of semi-final chamber music performance, the nine semi-finalists perform a sonata of their choice with either violinist Melissa White or cellist William DeRosa.

JEREMY DENK RECITAL
Wednesday, July 18 . 8PM — Jeremy Denk, an American pianist with an unusually broad repertoire, has been lauded by the New York Times for performances that are “bracing, effortlessly virtuosic, and utterly joyous.”

A CENTURY OF RECORDED PIANISM
Friday, July 20 . 11AM — Curator Donald Manildi illustrates the “Golden Age” of piano playing with rarities from the collections of the International Piano Archives at Maryland.

FINAL CONCERTO ROUND
With Baltimore Symphony Orchestra
Saturday, July 21 . 8PM — The three finalists will perform a concerto with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra and the first, second and third place winners will be announced from the stage.
