About This Event

DEVIATED THEATRE, voted “DC’s Best Dance Company 2012” by Washington City Paper, will present siGHt, an original dance opera by Kimmie Dobbs Chan and Enoch Chan over 16 performances at Joe’s Movement Emporium between September 19 and October 7, 2012. DEVIATED THEATRE will also be presenting a collection of other rising artists with original works as opening acts to the production. Submissions were collected until July 15th, and selected artists will be announced August 1, 2012. Applications are available at www.deviatedtheatre.org.

siGHt was originally commissioned by the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and the Millennium Stage in 2011. It is the fourth evening- length work written, choreographed, and directed by the Chans, and the first one to feature a child as a main character. This production, dubbed a dance opera, will include 50-minutes of non-stop movement, including clever partnering on folding chairs and contemporary dance with aerial silks. The production involves a rotating cast of over a dozen and a half performers. The story of siGHt unfolds around a family of three—mom, pop, and young daughter. One evening the girl tiptoes out of bed to continue reading a favorite book only to find herself surrounded by specters whispering urgent messages from the dark. An unthinkable tragedy befalls the family. The specters continue to speak, and magic abounds, which the girl tries desperately to make her family see.

A video trailer of the work with interviews of cast and excerpts of choreography can be viewed at: http://www.kickstarter.com/profiles/deviatedtheatre/projects/created
