About This Event
Just in time for Election Day, The Capitol Steps return to the Hylton Performing Arts Center on Saturday, Sept. 22, 2012 at 8 p.m. for a hilarious evening of bipartisan spoofery that kicks off the Hylton Center’s 2012-2013 Hylton Presents season. Based in Washington, D.C., this hysterical musical comedy troupe has entertained audiences for more than 30 years with clever political musical parodies that lampoon those on both sides of the aisle, and has become a treasured institution both inside and outside the beltway, even by targets of the group’s irreverent satirical humor. A pre-performance discussion will be held 45 minutes prior to the performance in the Buchanan Partners Art Gallery. Prince William Hospital is the 2012-2013 Season Sponsor of the Hylton Presents season at the Hylton Performing Arts Center.
The Capitol Steps were founded in December 1981 when three staffers for Sen. Charles Percy – Elaina Newport, Jim Aidala and the late Bill Strauss – were tasked with planning entertainment for their office Christmas party. Inspired by the headlines of the day, the trio created clever song parodies and skits poking fun at those who held political office and The Capitol Steps were born. More than 30 years later, the ensemble is a well-respected establishment in Washington, D.C. and has performed for five presidents and countless politicians and personalities, who, according to The Capitol Steps, “only complain when they are not included in the program.” In addition to performing in D.C. and across the nation, The Capitol Steps have released more than 32 albums, including the ensemble’s latest, “Take the Money and Run – for President,” featuring a collection of new songs that skewer both Democrats and Republicans and everyone in between, including “You Can’t Hide This Biden Guy,” “Three Little Wives of Newt,” “If I Tax a Rich Man” and “Bush Cloned Cowboy.” The Capitol Steps have also appeared on NBC, CBS, ABC and PBS and also can be heard twice a year on NPR nationwide with the troupe’s “Politics Takes a Holiday” special.
Tickets for THE CAPITOL STEPS are $28, $36, $44. Single tickets for this performance are on sale starting Aug. 1, 2012. Visit the box office (open Tuesday-Saturday 10-6 and Thursday 10-8) or charge by phone at 888-945-2468 or visit HyltonCenter.org.
