About This Event
This September, The Fridge will present artist David Molesky’s DC-debut solo show AIR/WATER. Using a post-industrial romantic style to convey abstracted, turbulent moments in ominous environments, Molesky's paintings of fire, smoke, explosions, clouds and turbulent water show apocalyptic visions of nature.
Molesky’s show will open on Saturday, September 8, 5 – 9 pm. On Sunday, September 9, 12 – 2pm he will hold an artist talk. Over the course of the talk, Molesky will demonstrate his creative process by completing a new painting on site.
With the Gulf Oil Spill of 2010, Molesky marked a turning point in his body of work; he shifted his focus from a romanticized view of nature to a closer look at how man and his environment perpetuate conflict. The artist says, “I’m considering how current events of environmental degradation, like carbon emissions and large spills, are reinforcing a more contemporary narrative of man versus nature.”
Molesky’s work has been featured in numerous museum exhibitions including: the Baltimore Museum of Art; Passinger Fabrik, Munich, Germany; and the Grand Central Art Center, Cal State Fullerton. In 2010, his work was selected for the Pacific Coast Edition of New American Painting. Molesky has apprenticed with classical painters in Seattle, Monterey, and most recently, three years in Europe with the figurative artist, Odd Nerdrum. Molesky is now preparing for an exhibition next year in Rome. He lives and works in San Francisco, CA.
