About This Event
Join artist Juan Hernandez for the opening of his solo exhibit. Everyday life in Juan Hernandez’s native Tegucigalpa, Honduras is the inspiration for his series of paintings and linocuts. “Tierra y Memoria” will be featured at The Art League Gallery October 4 – November 5, 2012.
Hernandez paints what he knows and what he’s lived. His straightforward compositions, bold lines, texture, and defined shapes effectively capture the emotion of the people he portrays. He most often depicts people working on the streets performing humble, day-to-day, low-income jobs.
“My goal is not so much to make a representation of these scenes and their protagonists, but to express something about their human condition and the nature of their lives. These pieces are filled with my deep feelings for these people who are part of a country that faces many social, economic, and political challenges.”
Juan Ernesto Hernandez Gonzalez was born in raised in Flor del Campo, a suburb of Tegucigalpa, Honduras. Originally trained as an electrician, Juan pursued a university education and received a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration in 2006. His arts studies commenced at Honduras’s only fine arts institution, the National School of Fine Arts. After completing the program in November 2006, he came to Washington, DC and has since taken advantage of the Smithsonian Institution’s Resident Associates program and his shown work in local venues including Studio Gallery and The Art League.
