Artists talk and premiere of Rachel Mijares Fick's Scream Into the River
Kanchan Balsé's paintings are dense narrative studies informed by her domestic life and Indian heritage. Her paintings are loaded with cityscapes, train tracks, plumbing, houses and trappings of modern life. Over and into these, Balsé adds symbols representing personal aspects of her life, creating a language most can relate to.
Rachel Mijares Fick brings a series of photos to the project space that relate in a fascinating way to the content of Kanchan's work. Her installation, called The Horticulturalist, is comprised of two sets of photographs of dying plants. As each droops and fades, Fick attempts to restore them with paint and thread. They become an interesting statement on the nature of relationships and life. In addition, on Thursday, November 17, Rachel will premiere her video, Scream Into the River, at the gallery.
