In Unison: 21 Washington, D.C. Artists

About This Event

“It was a party … there was food and music, but instead of dancing, we made art.” This statement by artist Renée Stout reflects what happened when a collection of Washington, D.C. area artists from diverse backgrounds and varied visual arts disciplines came together in George Mason University School of Art’s print studio to each create a series of monoprints. The School of Art will showcase their work in an exhibition called “In Unison: 21 Washington, D.C. Artists,” which will be on display in the Mason Hall Atrium Gallery on the Fairfax Campus from Feb. 4 through March 6. The gallery is open Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. This project is sponsored by Millennium Arts Salon, which has served the D.C. arts community for more than 11 years. This exhibition is dedicated to the memory of Tom Green, one of the artists whose work will be on display in the exhibition.

“In Unison: 21 Washington, D.C. Artists” is a collaboration of artists who vary greatly in terms of age, race and ethnic background, gender, professional experience and accomplishments, and artistic disciplines; painters, sculptors, digital media artists, installation artists and printmakers were all participants in the project. These artists each created five monoprints in George Mason University School of Art’s print studio from February to June 2010 and during the month of June 2011. Though they were exploring their individual artist expression through the printmaking process, the environment presented the opportunity for interaction among the artists and encouraged a sense of collaboration.

“[This exhibition] brings together artists who work through a variety of media and printmaking processes in a collaborative effort – a long part of the printmaking tradition – to explore the art of the monoprint while showcasing the energies and cross-fertilizations within the contemporary art environment of Washington D.C.,” said Walter Kravitz, gallery director for the School of Art, who was a participant in the project.

Selected works from the more than 100 monoprints created were initially shown at the Kreeger Museum and later at the Hillyer Art Space in Washington, D.C. in 2010. This will be the final exhibition of a three-year traveling tour managed by International Arts and Artists.
