NEXT at the Corcoran: Class of 2012

People are always asking me where to look for art. I advise them first to just look at a lot of art in all different kinds of places so they can train their eye to see art in a more expansive way (beyond the decorative), plus it helps the new viewer figure out what kind of art he or she likes. Beyond visiting galleries and museums, a new art lover should visit student shows like NEXT at the Corcoran. Besides the possibility of discovering an artist before he or she becomes well-known, the art lover can see the experimentations of young artists. I find it exciting to see what young artists are trying, even if it's not quite working. It means they are taking risks and taking risks is the only way to achieve something new and wonderful.
